Why I stopped doing textbook exercises for YKI prep

Textbook exercises stopped working for me because they train you to recognise a grammar rule in isolation, not to produce Finnish under exam conditions. I noticed it about six months into my own YKI keskitaso prep: I could fill in every partitive-object gap in a workbook, but the same structure would disappear the moment I had to write an actual message to a landlord.

Why did textbook exercises stop working?

A fill-in-the-blank exercise gives you the sentence, the topic, and usually the verb — you just supply the ending. That's a recognition task, and YKI keskitaso doesn't test recognition. It tests whether you can generate a correct opinion piece, a formal email, or a spoken answer from nothing, on one of the exam's nine everyday topics. The gap between "I can complete this sentence" and "I can write this sentence from scratch, on a topic I didn't choose, in twenty minutes" is exactly the gap the exam measures. Textbook drills never made me practise closing it.

What replaced them?

I switched to producing full pieces of language in exam format: a real opinion paragraph, a real message, a real thirty-second spoken answer, on a real YKI topic — then comparing what I produced against a model answer and checking the specific rule I got wrong. It's slower than a workbook page, but it's the only practice that transfers, because it's the same task the exam actually asks for. The textbook isn't wrong, exactly — it's just answering a different question than the one YKI asks. Once I started practising production instead of recognition, my writing and speaking scores moved. My reading and listening, which I'd kept training the "textbook" way with graded input, didn't need to change at all.
